Without a Clue (1988) poses an racy and droll buy on the Sherlock Holmes mythos created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The film asks what if the character of Sherlock Holmes was truly a fictional character created by Doctor Watson, and is played by an actor, with Watson being the precise mastermind late solving the various cases and crimes?

In the film, Ben Kingsley plays Doctor Watson, the man leisurely the deductive and crime solving skills of his fictional character, Sherlock Holmes. For reasons that are revealed within the movie, Watson was not able to purchase credit for solving his first caper, so he invented the character of Sherlock Holmes, but soon found his creation was in mountainous ask, so he hired an actor, Reginald Kincaid (Michael Caine) to play the piece of the detective while Watson stayed in the background continuing to be the ‘brains’ of the operation. Only jam is Reginald Kincaid is a buffoonish, womanizing, gambling, drunkard, and unable to, as he set aside it, ‘…detect horse manure if he stepped in it.’ After a falling out, Doctor Watson fires Kincaid, and decides to go it alone as ‘The Crime Doctor’. Guess what? The memoir of Holmes has grown so sizable and become ensconced so deeply within the public psyche that no one takes Watson seriously, and even his publisher threatens to sue if Watson reveals the truth of the region publicly. Not only that, but a rather notable case bewitching the financial integrity of the British Empire has surfaced, one captivating the imperfect Professor Moriarty, and Holmes is the only man for the job. Watson finds himself in the humbling site of bringing Kincaid aid for what will be one last performance.

Kingsley and Caine play their parts perfectly, and are supported by a incredible cast including Jeffery Jones as Inspector Lestrade, Paul Freeman as Moriarty, Lysette Anthony, and Peter Cook. The dialogue is witty, and even though the residence a bit thin in some areas, the film works wonderfully as a farcical yarn with objective the accurate amounts of slapstick and tongue in cheek humor. A completely professional job done by everyone all around. My current fraction of the film was the conception of Watson using Holmes to sustain Inspector Lastrade busy tracking down pointless leads while Watson performed the actual detection at the crime scene. I was laughing hard when Holmes was on all fours inspecting the pattern of a rug with the baffled inspector factual next to him, trying to procure the jump on the ‘master’ detective.

I was a dinky disappointed in the release of this film on DVD, as I plan the describe and sound quality could have been better. Also, why is there only a beefy hide release available? Special features are virtually non-existent with the inclusion of a trailer for the film. MGM usually does a comely superior job with their releases, but they seemed to have dropped the ball here. Anyway, this is a colossal tiny film, and worth watching if only to behold two aesthetic actors at work

Cookieman108

You don’t have to be an avid reader of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories to savor “Without a Clue”. If you are at all familiar with this legendary character, you will most likely be pleased this fun, tongue-in-cheek contemplate at what it would be like if Holmes was actually the apprentice of Watson. Michael Caine plays the role of a down-on-his luck actor who is hired by Dr. Watson (Ben Kingsley) to play the role of the greatest Detective the world has ever seen (Sherlock Holmes) . The only grief is, “Holmes” can’t seem to cessation his drinking, gambling, and womanizing; nor does he have a shred of deductive reasoning skills. The narrative is clever and fresh, and the performances are amazing. Michael Caine plays the loveable doofus to perfection and Ben Kingsley wonderfully displays Watson’s constant frustrations at Caine’s ineptness. The movie is fun, reliable natured, and genuinely comical. It’s a shame it wasn’t well received by audiences when it was released in 1988 (I actually remember seeing it in the theater) . I would highly recommend this movie.

This is an attractive and highly absorbing film of an proper fresh day bounty hunter “Pappy” Thorson played by Steve McQueen in one of his best roles. McQueen gives an sterling performance of the aging bounty hunter that has outlived his usefulness and is out of status in the recent concrete world. One poignant scene has McQueen and Ben Johnson exchanging dialogue between two worn lawmen. This was Steve McQueen’s last film and you can detect a sense of better days long gone by. Yet he went out in the vein as the chilly man of action that he was best associated. This was probably Buzz Kulik’s finest directorial achievement as well. Kulik never seemed to live up to his potential, but this is his best pain. Kulik was able to accumulate immense performances from the actors and earn a camaraderie that can be felt on the hide. The cast also included Eli Wallach, Kathryn Harrold and LeVar Burton. Composer Michel Legrand who scored “The Thomas Crown Affair” was brought in to get this last film for McQueen. This film was a primary failure. I beg to differ. Smart a limited about the type of man Steve McQueen was this film demonstrates his huge ability as an actor and a actual human being. He knew the slay was come and he wanted to go out the same door he came in.

This was Steve McQueens’ last film and is not generally held in high regard by critics and fans alike. However, it is an attractive mix of comedy and action with an array of memorable characters that the viewer will remember. McQueen plays Ralph “Papa” Thorson, a new day bounty hunter that will expend practically any means to steal bail jumpers. ( The sincere Ralph Thorson has a cameo in the film as a bartender) Though McQueen was ill at the time of production,( he allegedly only found out of his terminal condition after checking into the hospital after filming was completed) he gives a multilayered performance which shows his high degree of skill as an actor. There are of course some edifying action sequences, but what is more entertaining is the subtle/low key humour that McQueen employs to round out his character: he is shown to be a dreadful driver in the movie, while in trusty life he was come professional level. Also his esteem of antiques shows his faded school obsessions and distrust of the unique world. ” Anything current is not friendly.” he states rather ruefully. There is a sweet subplot where his girlfriend( Kathryn Harrold) is preparing to have their child which collides with the scary main space where a old-fashioned quarry turns the tables on McQueen and comes after him for revenge. Eli Wallach is very funny in a supporting role as a bail bondsman, as Levar Burton is as a bail jumper who is befriended by McQueen and starts hanging around his house. Mixed in along the diagram are several other scenes which demonstrate the professionalism and determination of McQueens’ character to carry out his job, but detached remain an just and decent man at the extinguish of the day. One in particular is very disturbing where a cop friend of McQueens’ gets into deep anxiety and can only inspect a violent solution to his predicament. In 1980, I was on a plane from Novel York to Chicago when Valid Morning America showed a clip from this fair released film. It was very moving to me that when I observed the fellow passengers( practically all of them were businessmen in suits fiddling with reports and calculators) they were simply hypnotized by Steve McQueens’ presense when with gun in hand, he confronts a would be escapee with grit and comic humuor. I kind of felt then that they were thinking: ” Yeah, I wish I was doing something like that and was this guy.” So in summary, ” The Hunter” is a well made action film/character peep which caps the substantial Steve McQueens’ career. Audiences will also indulge in the subtle/sly comedy which is very deftly worked into the film. Thankyou Mr. McQueen. Your work will not be forgotten.

DIE NIBELUNGEN (The Nibelung Saga) . This 1924 memoir from Fritz Lang is the Grandaddy of all fantasy epics and now it can be seen as it was first presented with over 100 minutes of footage restored and with the modern music that was aloof for it by Gottfried Huppertz. With all the attention being given to Peter Jackson’s LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, this is the perfect time to release this film giving us the opportunity to glance a peaceful equivalent of Jackson’s huge feat.

For those of you familiar with the Wagner RING cycle there are some similarities but in fact it’s an entirely different tale. The entire running time is discontinuance to five hours and is divided into two separate films SIEGFRIED and KRIEMHILD’S REVENGE. The entire myth deals with deeds of valor and codes of honor and what happens when they are carried too far. Along the procedure there are dwarves, magic, blood oaths, ferocious battles and the devastating consequences of raw emotions. The parallels to what would happen in Nazi Germany a few years later are truly startling. Lang showed the world what would happen 20 years before it did.

The outstanding restoration work done by Transit Films coupled with the considerable current soundtrack of the new rep from the Munich Radio Orchestra makes viewing and hearing this masterpiece a thrilling experience. From the stylized barbaric sets and unbelievable camera effects through the stylized acting and actions, we behold more than German soundless cinema at its zenith, we are inspect to the rebirth of a truly astronomical work of art. The DVD comes loaded with a number of special features that give background on the film and the people responsible for it.

I have been a fan of Fritz Lang’s Die Nibelungen since my seize of the BETA tape version many years ago. I have anticipated this release for some time and have been thoroughly rewarded with the wait. Based on the 1861 play by Hebbel, it ignores Wagner’s treatment of the memoir to point to us with mythical characters place in a medieval background. For many, Die Nibelungen chronicle is the foundation of Germanic Kultur. It is a account of appreciate, honor, betrayal, loyalty, and revenge which culminates in the destruction of family bonds.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Die Nibelungen! Click Here

So, who will be eager in Die Nibelungen? Lovers of Wagner’s Der Ring Des Nibelungen will be familiar with the myth and will no doubt delight in seeing a variation of the Nibelungen sage. Wagner’s Brunnhilde will be seen as an amalgamation of Kriemhild and Brunhild. Lovers of fantasy will no doubt secure distinguished to devour here. The 60 foot dragon is a marvel to explore when you mediate when the film was produced (1924) . Lovers of drama will not be disappointed in the complex narrative that weaves it’s blueprint towards the catastrophic finale of Kreimhild’s Revenge. And finally, lovers of movies, in general, and movie history will truly want to examine one of the major motion pictures that have ever been produced.
What does this DVD version offer that the BETA and VHS versions do not? Plenty! We will originate with Gottfried Huppertz accumulate. I was initially concerned that I would hear a hackneyed reworking of Wagnerian themes. Thankfully Wagner is avoided which is at is should be. As distinguished, this version does not copy the Ring tale, so it is accurate that the music should be as unique as the screenplay. If you are a lover of early 20th century German romanticism, such as the composers Schrecker and Zemlinsky, you will like this obtain. Film collect devotees will judge of Korngold, Waxman, and Steiner. Since there is of course, no dialog or sound effects, you have the equivilent of a soundtrack cd at your disposal which you may listen to without even viewing the film.
Previous versions of Siegfried ran for 100 minutes, while this DVD version runs app. 143 minutes. Many of the previous scenes are now extended. Think Peter Jackson’s extended version of the Fellowship of the Ring as a comparison. However, there are a few valuable additions to the Lang film which construct a fully realized memoir. SPOILER ALERT: I will provide a few examples from Siegfried for those already familiar with previous versions. For anyone novel to this movie, you may wish to skip to the paragraph that is preceeded by a series of asteriks (*********)
There are some extended scenes which simply add more flavor to the yarn such as with the slaying of the dragon and Siegfried’s defeat of Alberic. But, there are a number of additional scenes which back propel the legend further. Kriemhild’s dream is restored which depicts a white dove (Siegfried) being attacked by two unlit crows (Hagen and Gunther) . Brunhild’s cramped rejection of the rotten, and the wedding ceremony have been added. You have a clearer belief of Gunther’s quandary on his wedding night, and his wish for Siegfried to replace him when Hagen states.”Damned be the deed half done..” At the conclusion of the hunting scene, after Hagen slays Siegfried, he waves his hand and announces “The Hunt is Over!” Dramatic stuff that. But, the most famous addition occurs at the very raze. While Kriemhild is veiwing Siegfried’s body, Hagen arrives. At that instant, blood flows from Siegfried’s damage making it determined to Kriemhild who the murderer was. The harm scene was restored. Also an extended scene follows when Kriemhild, wanting revenge against Hagen, watches in fright as Gunther and her other brothers shield Hagen. The most well-known title card is then displayed, which is the centerpiece of the chronicle. It reads: “Loyalty for loyalty, Kriemhild. His deed is ours. His fate is ours. Our breast is his shield.” You wont accept this crucial scene in the previous version, for there it is only implied.
********************* I was initially unimpressed by the unique title translations that accompanied the DVD version. It is indispensable to identify characters as soon as a terminate up is shown. Hagen had two finish up shots which would have been a perfect dwelling to introduce him. Kriemhild’s two brothers were also not properly identified when they are shown for the first time sitting on a bench. Also in the first canto, Mime is not properly identified when first seen. In the previous version, when he appears, so does the following: “Jealous hatred gripped Mime the Smith.” It is indispensable to assign this in order to understand his motives for treating Siegfried as he does. However, once these initial reservations passed, I was satisfied with the comprehensive title cards that followed. I have they could have done without the gothic lettering on the title cards though as it served as a distraction to the movie. A simple font would have made reading the cards easier.
The transfers are pleasant when you believe the age of the film and sections of the movie which appeared deteriorated in previous versions have been restored. There is no decrease in the quality of the extended scenes versus the previously released scenes, resulting in a homogeneous quality in the film.
To establish time and location, I will not devote any detailed attention to Kriemhild’s Revenge which is also an extended version. Suffice it to say, that everything I eminent for Seigfried applies. You will not be disappointed
Fritz Lang’s Die Nibelungen defies genre and time and is a pivotal film in cinematic histoy. For those of you who have never invested the time watching a restful movie, there is no better set to open than suitable here. Urgently recommended!

The ‘Burbs isn’t one of those movies you’d glance being drooled over by film critics or even audiences, but it is one of those movies that if you saw it on TV every couple of months, you’d discover it.

Joe Dante’s strange sense of humor shines on this movie even more than the Gremlins movies. It also offers a cast of characters that are as considerable relatable as they are crazy. Everyone has exclusive neighbors, lawful?

Tom Hanks is in top comedic earn in this one offering classic lines like “I’ve never seen anyone drive their garbage to the street and bang the hell out of it with a stick.” Then you have the hilarious neighbor Rick Ducommunn who I feel should have had a better career after this film. Corey Feldman (always a treat) plays the irresponsible teen and Bruce Dern is quick-witted as the crazy military reject.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The ‘Burbs! Click Here

All these characters mixed up in a bizzare kill mystery is pure magic. But what makes this movie have replay value is the cramped things that you don’t necessarily gather while watching for the first time. For example, when Rick Ducommunn comes over to visit Tom Hanks and eats nearly everything in his refrigerator while the audience is engrossed with his tales of apprehension. Or unbiased the body movement of Hanks when he observes the weirdness of his neighborhood throughout the film. Hilarious.

I may be looked upon as exclusive for giving this movie 5 stars, but it is one I can always rely on for a valid laugh and suited quotes.

“NO!” “About a 9 on the tension scale, Rube.”

“I want to slay everyone. Satan is grand. Satan is our pal.”

“Red rover red rover let Ray go over.”

“I’ve been blown up! Lift me to the hospital, I’m sick.”

Watch this movie and you too will quote these lines forever.

Rick Ducummon is astounding in this movie! Don’t gather me heinous, Bruce Dern, Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher, Dick Miller, Henry Gibson, and Courtney Gains are all expansive too, but Duccumon so rarely gets a chance to shine. We’ve seen him as the guy in the manhole(“Shut it down now!”) in DIE HARD, he’s the guy whose pool gets a car crashed into it in THE LAST BOYS SCOUT (plus he starred opposite Brian Bonsall(FAMILY TIES) in Disney’s BLANK CHECK) . He impartial is never given an opportunity like he has here and he’s mountainous! “The thermostat on a home furnace-is that supposed to go to 5000 degrees d’ya judge? ” and “My wife is home??!” amongst other classic lines are honest pouring out of him here. I can’t own some people don’t like this movie. At the very worst it’s an innefectual, light comedy. At the very best(my demolish) it’s a Hitchcock inspired, post-modern silly pastiche that also has Corey Feldman in it. This movie is a lot of fun. I’ve watched it a bunch and it only gets better. One of Tom Hanks later frenitic comedic performances. Dvd includes alternate ending which is nice to stare.

Amanda Auclair is by far one of the most aesthetic and sexy woman you will ever look in any film. Even though she is not listed as the star she has as great camouflage time as any one in the DVD. She is neat hot in three scenes, two are with guys one with a girl. The first scene is worth the designate of the DVD alone. The second has her in a camouflage but unruffled is hot. If you like any of the Torchlight releases you can not go disagreeable with this, a must have for any Amanda Auclair fan.

I liked the spot and the actors. But there was only one vag shot and it wasn’t even from the main actress, they showed no private parts shots at all. Every time a penetration scene or station shft scene would normally occur they instead explain you the slow statue shaking. But besides that the sex scenes were proper and the acting semi decent (like it matters) .

My husband doesn’t even like musicals, but he likes this one!

What could be better than singing by Howard Keel and Jane Powell? The music is gigantic, the colors shining and brilliant, the choreography astonishing.

To our original eyes, the memoir of this 1954 musical seems a miniature outdated–the attitudes towards women are somewhat distasteful. Howard Keel’s character, Adam, needs someone to desirable and cook for his household of 6 wild brothers, so he unprejudiced goes into town and “acquires” a wife, dreadful Millie (Jane Powell) who has no plan what is in store for her.

When the boys settle they need wives, they unprejudiced go into town, kidnap a batch of girls, beat the girls’ boyfriends boring, and utilize the winter snowbound with the girls who miraculously tumble in savor with them. OK, well then…

But, the charm of this musical somehow allows us to overlook all of this, and Millie’s sheer spunkiness in trying to tame these wild men redeems them somehow. So everyone learns his lesson and all ends well.

This musical is also lively in that it showcases several young talents who became better known in later years: The character of Dorcas is played by Julie Newmeyer (a young Julie Newmar, Catwoman in the TV series Batman in later years), Russ Tamblyn (future star of West Side Account), and Ruta Kilmonis (later semi-celebrity Ruta Lee) . Even in this very early outing, Julie Newmar’s distinctive enlighten and looks build her stand out.

The director, Stanley Donen, directed some of the best musicals in the 50s, including Damn Yankees, Singing in the Rain, Kismet (uncredited), and Royal Wedding. Inexplicably, in his later career, he directed such bombs as Saturn 3 (1980) .

A “sleeper” when it was released in 1954, “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” is quiet one of the freshest musicals ever made. With a stunning, challenging come by by Gene de Paul and Johnny Mercer and rambunctious but carefully-controlled choreography by Michael Kidd, this modestly-budgeted movie surprised everyone by becoming an tremendous hit, even being nominated for Best Narrate. Based on a short fable by Stephen Vncent Benet called “Sobbin’ Women” (which was the film’s working title), it tells the myth of a frontier woman Millie (Jane Powell) courted by a backwoodsman Adam (Howard Keel) . He takes her off to his rustic home, neglecting to vow her he has six untamed brothers to care for. Undaunted, Millie sets about domesticating the household, complete with readings from classical history, including the sage of the Sabine women, which the boys steal to heart. The musical was filmed in AnscoColor and CinemaScope, and the wide shroud is utilized to gigantic finish, especially in the barn-raising sequence. Letter-box is mandatory. DePaul and Mercer wrote some effective songs (“Astonishing Day”, “When You’re in Savor”, “Sobbin’ Women”) and the numbers blend into the myth perfectly under Stanley Donen’s unruffled direction. Dresden-doll coloratura Powell and strapping baritone Keel invent such an glorious couple it’s unfamiliar M~G~M never co-starred them again. (Evidently a musical version of “Robin Hood” never got past the drawing board.) The brothers include Fresh York City Ballet star Jacques d’Amboise and a non-dancer, the mysterious Jeff Richards, who may have been the handsomest man ever to appear on the mask, Rock Hudson notwithstanding. Among the brides is Julie Newmar, who a couple of seasons later would stupefy Broadway in “Li’l Abner”.Luminous and pleasantly aggressive, “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” is good up there with Metro’s best musicals.

Audrey Hepburn was — and remains — the perfect illustration of elegance and sophistication in Hollywood. A lot of actresses have tried to imitate her study, but they couldn’t manage the same grace and skill, both onscreen and off.

And the “Audrey Hepburn Five Pac” brings together five of the films that helped shape that image, including her three top starmaking roles. Okay, they’re not her most impressive. But even when they’re uneven (“Paris When It Sizzles”), her movies are charming, sweet and honest a puny bit quirky.

Bored young Princess Ann (Hepburn) goes on a “Roman Holiday,” when she has a poor reaction to a sedative. She wanders straight into struggling American journalist Joe Bradley (Gregory Peck) . When he realizes she’s the missing princess, he takes her on a fun vacation in Rome, with his pal taking photos for a hit article. “Sabrina” (Hepburn) is the daughter of the chauffeur at the palatial Larabee estate, and is in care for with the ne’er-do-well second son, David (William Holden) . After a stint at a cooking school, where she gains sophistication and confidence, she returns to enthrall David. But since his brother Linus (Humphrey Bogart) has arranged a business marriage for David, Linus starts to woo Sabrina instead… and falls for her as well.

“Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is a daily ritual for Holly Golightly, a social butterfly. When kept man Paul Varjak (George Peppard) moves into a nearby apartment, he is instantly enchanted by the ditzy, sweet-natured Holly. But for all Holly’s fun, Paul starts to realize that all is not well with her. As Holly’s life starts to deteriorate, Paul sets out to present her what her life will be like without valid admire.

“Humorous Face” becomes a trouble for a fashion photographer Dick Avery (Fred Astaire) who is assisting a fashion queen with the unique “pink” explore and the lustrous model peer. After a disastrous shoot at a boho bookstore, Avery is struck by the owner Jo’s (Hepburn) peruse, and convinces her to become their newest model — and she only agrees to rep to Paris so she can meet her common philosopher. But she’s also falling in like with Dick and her modelling career.

“Paris When It Sizzles” features Richard Benson (William Holden), a laconic playboy screenwriter, who procrastinated on his forthcoming script until unprejudiced a few days before the deadline. So he hurriedly hires a secretary, Gabrielle (Hepburn) to support him approach up with an opinion and write it — except that all they can advance up with, as they drop in worship, are all sorts of completely bizarre scenarios.

Yes, they are all romantic comedies, completely unrelated except that all of them have Audrey Hepburn. But all three are fun, well-written (“You can’t live here! I live here!” “Hi, neighbor!”), and taking position in chic apartments, palatial mansions, Parisian runways, and the streets of Rome. And each has a theme: cherish that doesn’t reach easy, whether the predicament is one of the people fervent, parents or unprejudiced different personalities.

There’s also slapstick comedy (David injuring his butt on champagne glasses), and more sophisticated comedy (like when Anna and Joe pretend that they were speeding on their diagram to rep married) . And Hepburn provides plenty of it, such as her crazy club dance or her encounter with a vampire.

Unlike many actresses, Hepburn’s best-known roles were NOT all alike, nor were they all carbon copies of her — we have wistful bohemians, party girls, haunted teens, and chained-back princesses. Even when we shouldn’t really like the characters, she gave them warmth, sensitivity and likability that can’t be faked. And she could be very comical too — it’s hard not to laugh when Holly yells “Timber!”, as a drunken guest keels over.

The Audrey Hepburn Five Pack clusters five of Hepburn’s most chic, charming movies, for those are objective falling in fancy, or who like a capable romantic comedy. Charming, cute and sweet.

Only Audrey Hepburn retains the level of cache that would define the constant repackaging of her films, and here are five films – three of which have already been presented as a plot, the Audrey Hepburn Collection – presented in yet another DVD package. Her natural charm and grace are pervasive throughout – even when the vehicles themselves sometimes fail to remove – but all provide proof definite that she was among the most consistently affecting of actresses.

In a beautifully restored print, 1953’s Roman Holiday (*****) provides a most gripping introduction to the then-24 year passe actress thanks mainly to director William Wyler’s expert direction and Dalton Trumbo’s sweetly observant script. In hindsight, it is a modest performance compared to Hepburn’s later work, but Wyler knew enough to let her natural breeding attend its purpose in conveying the carriage of a princess who experiences her first glance into the world outside her hermetically sealed world. The revelation here is really Gregory Peck, stunning and stalwart as always but in this movie quite relaxed with a surprising light comedy touch. It is actually his Joe Bradley that goes through the dramatic character arc that makes the ending so bittersweet. Wyler’s humanistic touch is everywhere – from the amusing haircutting scene with the smitten barber to the distinguished Mouth of Truth scene where Peck pretends to lose his hand to the concluding press conference, which turns into a dance of acting nuance and unspoken feelings. The 2002 DVD has a robust status of extras, including an helpful documentary on the production itself (inspect for Hepburn’s first Hollywood shroud test) and other short films on the film’s restoration process and Edith Head’s contribution to Hollywood costuming.

With its cynical humor and the European-based sensibilities around different classes, 1954’s Sabrina (*****) is most definitely a Billy Wilder record. The film is not quite in the same league of other Wilder classics like Sunset Boulevard, Some Like It Hot or The Apartment, but on its acquire, it’s an airy soufflé of a comedy served on a perfectly exquisite warming dish. What I like most about this movie is that Wilder keeps the fairy narrative trappings of the narrative grounded in mordant wit and shrewd observations about business mergers, bribery and class snobbery. This is what keeps this movie surprisingly unique. Torn between the characters played by her leading men, Humphrey Bogart and William Holden, Hepburn as a chauffeur’s daughter is charming. This was her first introduction to Givenchy fashion onscreen, and the contrast in her appearance between “Roman Holiday” and “Sabrina” is actually more startling than the one in the movie itself. It is no wonder she became such a style icon from that point forward. While Bogart is too dour in his role of older brother Linus (a role pegged for Cary Grant who canceled at the last microscopic, damn the luck), Holden is hilarious as shallow, ne’er-do-well younger brother David. The ending is inevitable, but leave it to Wilder to mix sweet and sour better than a Cantonese restaurant. There is a brief making-of documentary on the 2001 DVD.

Presented in a unique 50th Anniversary Edition DVD, 1957’s Amusing Face (****) is a Hollywood confection teaming Hepburn with an effortlessly debonair Fred Astaire status to George and Ira Gershwin’s memorable music. The elegantly mounted numbers provide the ideal complement to the featherweight dwelling centered on Dick Avery, a world-renowned, Richard Avedon-like fashion photographer who discovers his next superstar model in Jo Stockton, a bookshop clerk and aspiring philosopher, in time for a major runway event in Paris. Starting with the photography provided by Avedon himself, the film is stylish to the nth degree with a daring color palette that director Stanley Donen and cinematographer Ray June bring to vibrant life. This level of plot will not sit well with some contemporary film viewers, and the opposites-attract storyline seems particularly forced here by the thirty years that separate the co-stars’ ages. Regardless, several individual elements work well beginning with Astaire who epitomizes class and artistic drive as Avery, and his dancing and singing remain undiminished by the years. Hepburn is certainly picture-perfect as Jo, looking particularly spectacular in the fashion shoot sequence. With her ballet training, Hepburn moves well in the dance numbers, though she is not a natural and seems oddly flat-footed when paired with the lithe Astaire. A couple of shorts are offered on the 2007 DVD, as well as a photo gallery and a disposable extra about Paramount movies in the 1950’s.

1961’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s (****) level-headed tells a lively memoir, yet the film has a dated feel perhaps because director Blake Edwards tries so hard to take the upscale bohemian atmosphere of early sixties Unusual York. In a role that author Truman Capote wanted to cast Marilyn Monroe, Hepburn is scrumptious as the aptly named Holly Golightly and somehow dances around the fact that her character is a high-priced call girl through her sense of style, fun and vulnerability. Holly’s dread of commitment is the crux of this myth, even though she is hopelessly drawn to a failed writer played by George Peppard, who is kept in handsome style by a wealthy matron played with conniving sophistication by Patricia Neal. Peppard is the faded link here as he doesn’t have the light touch required to maintain up with Holly’s shenanigans. The rest of the cast can be best described as eccentric, in particular, Buddy Ebsen as Holly’s backwoods first husband and an inappropriately cast Mickey Rooney as the Japanese neighbor upstairs. Henry Mancini’s romantic music provides the perfect accompaniment, and Hepburn’s plaintive, ukulele-strummed version of “Moon River” is aloof the most definitive. The rain-soaked kiss in the alley is fair about as splendid a scene as you are likely to eye in movies. One improvement over the Audrey Hepburn Collection is the inclusion of the 45th Anniversary DVD package released in 2006, which includes commentary from producer Richard Shepherd, a making-of retrospective featurette, a short about Hepburn’s fashion sense and two other shorts focused on Tiffany’s the store.

The least of the movies here, 1964’s Paris When It Sizzles (***) is a heavy-handed concoction that reunites Hepburn and Holden under the direction of Richard Quine. Working with an overly contrived, intermittently amusing screenplay by George Axelrod, the overlong result feels like the old-style French farce upon which it is based but with the artificial veneer of 1960’s Hollywood studio product. The frothy station centers on aging Hollywood screenwriter Richard Benson, who is holed up in Paris attempting to beat the deadline spot forth by big-time producer Alexander Meyerheim to do his latest screenplay. Benson has to hand in the completed script in two days, but the predicament is that he hasn’t even started since he has been busy boozing and womanizing in typical alpha-male fashion. He hires impressionable Gabrielle Simpson as his live-in secretary and becomes inspired to write the aptly named “The Girl Who Stole the Eiffel Tower”. The rest of the movie goes benefit and forth between the reality of the impending deadline at Richard’s apartment and the fantasy scenes of the screenplay coming to life. It does have its charms with some laughable spy-caper turns and cameo appearances by Marlene Dietrich in a walk-on, Noel Coward as Meyerheim, and a particularly silly Tony Curtis as Gabrielle’s Method-style actor boyfriend. Hepburn is never less than charming here, while Holden keeps his innate hamminess in check. However, neither seems especially challenged by the laughable proceedings. The only extra on the 2001 DVD is the novel theatrical trailer.

The episodes always began in the same fashion: On a stormy night, a disembodied articulate welcomes us to an obviously timid yet strangely intellectual castle called Wicked Hall. A vampire bat flies across a tubby moon and attempts to enter a window, which inexplicably moves, causing the bat to wreck into the stone wall, revert to vampire obtain, and tumble to the ground. The vampire looks at the viewer and gripes, “This residence is driving me BATTY!”

The vampire, of course, was Count Drac, one of the hosts of Filmation’s GROOVIE GOOLIES, a 1970’s celebrated which is the latest fresh release under BCI’s Ink & Paint label. This cartoon, a spin-off of the then-popular THE ARCHIE Display and originally paired with the adventures of SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH, is a long-awaited release that has finally arrive to DVD in a package featuring the complete series on 3 discs.

An exponent of the classic Universal Monsters craze that began in the 1960’s (and was peaceful going strong in the ’70’s), GROOVIE GOOLIES was a gang of reliable, rock-and-roll-playing monsters whose adventures acted as a sort of monsterized kids’ version of ROWAN AND MARTIN’S LAUGH-IN, following almost the same format good down to the wall of windows (here christened “Odd Window Time”) where the characters told jokes and one-liners. In addition to Drac, the other Goolies were Frankie (the obedient, sweetly goofy Frankenstein’s Monster), Wolfie (a hip, surfing, hot-rod-driving, practical-joking Werewolf), Mummy, Boneapart (a skeleton who fell apart as often as not), the sexy Vampira-inspired Bella LaGhostley, wacky witch-cook Hagatha, and a host of others. Sabrina makes appearances as well, along with some of the other characters from her explain (which deserves its bear release as a companion to this status, as the Goolies originated on SABRINA) . The pacing of each episode is frenetic, which helps with some of the humor; many of the jokes are enormously corny, but the delivery and hasten with which they are told makes them humorous, and the character voices are expedient talent, featuring Howard Morris and Larry Storch doing most of the characters.

Each episode also featured fun, cute and funky soft-rock songs that were usually somehow related to the display (two per episode), and the Goolies actually scored a Top Ten hit during the ’70’s with “Chick-A-Boom,” which is also here. The episodes have been well restored, with vibrant color, and the artwork, which Filmation has usually excelled at, really stands out.

Extras include commentary for two episodes, featuring Lou Schemier (head of Filmation during its speed),historian Darrel McNeil, monster expert Bob Burns and GOOLIES head writer Jack Mendelsohn, hosted by voice-over artist Wally Wingert. Wingert also appears as one of the stars of a “docu-comedy” called GOOLIANS, which combines documentary material with a sitcom format. In this feature (which runs almost like a GOOLIES episode) Wingert and fellow Goolian Daniel Roebuck (of LOST), both self-confessed monster freaks, are sent on a mission to procure information about the Groovie Goolies to cure their classic monster fixation. From my point of belief, there isn’t anything harmful with a classic monster fixation, but along the draw we hear from Mendelsohn, Schemier, Alice Cooper (who originated the monsters/rock music connection), Ron Chaney (grandson of Lon Jr.), Forrest J. Ackerman (ex-FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND publisher) and more, so maybe it’s a friendly thing.

If you’re looking for a method to introduce your kids to the opinion that sometimes scary can be fun, grab this set; it’s a tall Halloween treat and a amazing return visit from some obsolete fiends. To quote Frankie, “We NEEDED that!”

Yes!…a complete dwelling that has been a long wait over due. I myself, was not only disquieted, but, very jubilant to leer the return of Groovie Goolies on a bulky complete collection…I would concept i’d never scrutinize these cartoons again and all was lost to the gigantic memories of time only to discover dust, however, the value of titanic question from customers certain can bring it wait on. These cartoons distinct brought help a lot of expansive and fabulous memories of my childhood and i cherish every diminutive of it.
